Seth Damm

Seth Damm’s first encounter with cotton rope sparked fresh ways of thinking about the application of line and color on the body; this new venture into interior spaces is a dive into the core tension and fluidity of rope itself. The approach begins horizontally with hundreds of feet of rope, untangled and ready. Beginning in the middle, as one would a puzzle with no edges, Damm allows room to improvise with slow steady hand-work and an intuitive approach. If art holds a specific frequency for the viewer, one they can return to again and again, the frequency of this work contains freedom in the midst of tension. Rope holds latent potential in every twisted fiber. This group of wall pieces elicit the cooperation of rope to express expansive potential much like an instrument draws a note and suspends it in the air.

Seth Damm’s Ropemask Turns Heads at Homo Faber Biennale 2024

The work Ropemask has been transformative in the way it pushed Seth Damm’s 3D technique forward. Being in a creative relationship with such an exquisitely common material has been life-changing for him. Rope has guided and challenged Seth with its attributes, including strength, flexibility, resilience, utility, and lightness. With no previous experience in fibre or dyeing, Seth’s jump into wearable rope was instinctive and raw. Ropemask, presented during the New Orleans Carnival, was highly admired, recognising Seth’s creative material choice.
