Dana László da Costa
Dana László da Costa was born in Brazil and spent most of her youth growing up in the Neotropics, one of the six major biogeographical regions of the world, in rural Brazil. Away from electricity, she developed a special, timeless, and intimate understanding of nature that is reflected in all her works. The active perception of nature led to an almost natural, harmonious, and reciprocal relationship between nature and a perspective of nature as the first true artist.
Dana uses materials such as wool and silk to create textile artworks that deal with “the natural” universally and diversely. She follows an elaborate creative process that begins with the search for bark and plants in her home country, continues with the independent dyeing, winding, and spooling of the wool, and culminates in tufting. There Is something organic about Dana’s work that immediately draws you in. They flow and blend natural and abstract forms with depth and tactile sensibilities. Her pieces never really feel like tapestry. They feel as though an other-dimensional plant is bursting from the wall. Something familiar, but other-worldly and mysterious.

The dyed, heavy wool work by Dana László da Costa, the fifth piece in the exhibition, conveys a feeling of heat on more than just a sensory level: for her work "Ibirapitanga" (from the Tupí-Guaraní languages: 'red tree'), the Brazilian artist used a plant-based pigment obtained from the native 'Pau-Brasil' - the tree that once gave the country its name. As a result of the conquest by Portugal, which brought with it the exploitation of natural resources and the mining of valuable brazilwood, the plant that is so central to Brazil’s history and cultural memory is now an endangered species. Extractivism and land theft have been destroying the unique flora that is essential to the planet's survival since the colonization of the American continent. Through her work, the artist consciously addresses these issues, as well as highlighting the importance and exuberance of Latin American flora.
